Volume One
Close Up Conundrums
How often do you hear an ad for a magic book say, "This
one effect ALONE is worth the price of the book." Well,
we could certainly say that several times over. Consider
this:
CONSIDER: What would you pay for a virtually sleight
free card effect that can play for over 5 minutes, is topical,
and can be done virtually under the spectator's nose? With
UPC miracle II, you cause blank cards to become printed duplicates
of freely selected cards, entire blank decks to print themselves
and much more- but that is only ONE effect in Quietus Of
Creativity volume One.
CONSIDER: A coins through the table effect which uses
a GLASS TOP TABLE and allows the spectators to SEE the magic
happen.
CONSIDER: A Magical Money Making effect which uses a
plain sheet of notebook paper and ends with a REAL US LEGAL TENDER
dollar printed right in the middle of the notebook paper... lines
and all!
CONSIDER: Effects where popcorn visible pops itself,
then moves back in time to become an unpopped kernal yet again..... With
no sleights!
From 1988- 1994, author, performer and writer; Dean Montalbano
created HUNDREDS of effects and variations, many of which were
published in Genii, Linking Ring, MUM, MagiGram and other magic
magazines. In 1994, he vanished from the magic world for
20 years. Much of his material was never released, and in some
cases that which was released was hidden in obscurity due to
publication in long out of print periodicals.
Through exclusive arrangement with Leaping
Lizards Publishing, over one thousand pages of
his vintage material has been unearthed, re-edited, and commented
upon by the creator.
This material will be released to the magic community ONLY at
special request of the author.

Numbered copies, signed by the author, The books will be available
for 365 days from the date of publication, or until they are
sold out, whichever comes FIRST!
Note this book has been criticized for the $69.95 price for
this Limited edition, Signed and Numbered title. It is high to
be certain- but if you find one routine or item you decide to
use, adapt or add to your performances, to many it would be worth
more than that. It is expensive! That is certain...
and it is exclusive. Less than 500 people in the magic world
will have access to this material, then it will be gone.
Consider this: How many individual tricks have you paid for
that were half or even as much as the price of this book that
are sitting on your shelf unused? How many tricks have
you bought "just to see how they work" and then found
they were not practical? This books is filled with creative ideas,
many are ready to go, others you will have to adapt to your style,
situation or skill- THAT is great! The whole idea behind
this material is to get you to be creative!
It has been pointed out, as it does in the text; that
this book IS NOT for beginners! Often the methods are hinted
at or, reference other standard effects- again this is
intentional and as noted- the material was originally created
for those with a more vast performance experience.

TABLE
OF CONTENTS
RING
AROUND THE ROSY 21
A spectator’s borrowed finger ring is
caused to pass through a solid object. Then, as a follow
up effect, the ring vanishes and reappears on the stem of a rose!
TOOTHPICK
TO PARASOL 24
A self explanatory title in which a toothpick
is wrapped with tissue, and stroked by the performer. It transforms
into a small paper cocktail parasol.
THE
U.P.C. MIRACLE II 26
An amazing routine for you card workers with
a modern premise that requires NO complicate sleight of hand. The
performer shows a blank deck of “laser beam cards” and
another deck on which every card has a barcode. A card
is freely selected. The performer passes a blank card over
the barcode, and the laser card “reads” the
barcode and becomes a DUPLICATE of the freely select card… But
that is ONLY the start!
DIVE
CAPTAIN DIVE 34
A non-gimmicked version of the submerged card
mystery which offers TWO versions of the effect and two varied
methods!
CHEWED
AND RESTORED GUM 39
A nice piece of visual magic in which both
wrapper and gum are restored to pre-chewed condition with the
wave of a hand.
OF
DOGS AND HANDKERCHIEFS 42
A peculiar story involving human sized gold
fish and other oddities. A handkerchief penetrates a deck of
cards and ends up with a selected card magically impaled in the
center of the knotted hank!
WHEN
THE MOON IS FULL 47
Marked photographs handled by the spectator
transform during the full moon during this amusing story. The
finale happens when ALL the photo’s turn blank. All with
little sleight of hand.
BATTEN
DOWN THE HATCHES 52
A magical key is somehow inserted into a solid
deck of cards. It seems to slide right into the solid deck. Later
a selected card is found to magically have a key hole through the
center!
RAINBOWS
AND RIDDLES 54
Imagine a sunbeam was in your hands. Spray
some water and colors of the rainbow appear. That is the premise
in this charming routine wherein a golden cone of “sunshine” is
misted and causes rainbow color balls to appear. The finale
is a large colored ball too big to have hidden in the cone!
GOLDI-BEAR
AND THE 36 LOCKS 58
The performer causes a signed picture of a
locked padlock to UNLOCK in the spectator’s hand. In
a follow up effect a padlock picture has a ring locked on it,
and inside the card on which the picture is printed, SEALED between
the layers, a previously vanished spectator's ring appears.
REMOTE
CONTROL 61
A remote control deck of cards is shown and
demonstrated to actually control which cards come flying out
of the repeatedly shuffled deck. Then, due to a malfunction,
the deck FUSES together into a solid stack!
MOLECULES
OF MATTER 64
A card is selected
and genuinely buried in the deck. A joker is stuck lengthwise
through the width of the deck. The performer smashes a
stapler down on the deck, and when the joker is lifted, the spectator’s
card is seen to be stapled to it. The two cards are ripped apart,
and give to the spectator.. ALL CAN BE EXAMINED!
FORT
KNOX 67
A borrowed ring is trapped in a hand and handkerchief.
With the wave of a Magic Key, the ring appears on the shaft of
the key. In a follow up effect the same key is used to “open” a
coin which is seen at the end to have a pie shaped CHUNK missing
from it!
NAILED
AND SCREWED 70
A nail is hammered into a block of wood. With
everyone watching, the performer causes it to change into
a screw which must then be removed from the block of wood using
a screwdriver! All may be examined!
A
FAMILIAR RING 73
A cool variation on the destroyed and restored
dollar bill classic, which ends up involving the performer’s
finger ring.
POP
GOES ORVILLE REDENBACHER 77
A performer causes a kernel of popcorn to
pop VISIBLY while sealed in a small clear tube. Then an
entire bowl of unpopped kernels is caused to pop by magic.
REHCABNEDER
ELLIVRO SEOG POP 82
A follow up effect causes a POPPED kernel
of corn to go back in time and become an unpopped kernel right
under the spectator’s nose!
THE
TOAST OF THE TOWN 85
A failed card trick is recouped when the performer
causes a slice of bread to be magically toasted. The toast forms
the pattern of the name of the selected card. Spectators may
eat toast.
DOUBLE
COUPON DAZE 87
A magic coupon is used to reveal a spectator’s
freely selected signed card, they might suspect some trickery
until it is seen that SOMEHOW the coupon is actually printed
on the BACK of the spectator’s SIGNED CARD. But wait… there
is more… Turns out, the entire rest of the deck
is ALL BLANK! No complicated sleights.
CRYSTAL
IMAGE 92
An awesome coin through the table effect using
a CLEAR glass table and a CLEAR glass! After several demonstrations
of the coins penetrating down through the table, a coin is also
caused to penetrate from the underside UP, quite visibly!
LIKE
SANDS THROUGH THE HOURGLASS 97
An hourglass vanishes from inside a small
three fold screen made of previously blank cards. One of
the cards bears a ghostly image of the now ethereal hourglass.
DON’T
DRINK AND GAMBLE 100
A series of coin penetrations… First
the coins penetrate through a solid table, Then through
a handkerchief, and lastly through a solid mug. Very simple combination
of some old and some new ideas!
THE
GREAT BADGE OF MAGIC 103
A cute role playing effect with a couple spectators.
The spectators get to do some magic of their own with this gender
role reversal, a dollar bill vanish and reappearance in spite
of impossible circumstances!
HAIR
OF THE WITCHES HEAD 106
Another revisitation of the gypsy thread effect.
SUGAR
AND SPICE 109
A chop cup type routine using an ice cream
come, chocolate coins and a few surprises.
THE
HAZARDS OF NUCLEAR FALL OUT 112
After being exposed to a “reactor in
a can” the spectator is shown to have become victim to
the fall-out of the nuclear reactor; they are now unable to lift
a light-weight canister.
BATTER
UP 115
A cookie and a donut change place with no
sleight of hand, then multiply and later combine so the donut
has a cookie center and the cookie has a donut-like hole it the
middle!
THERE’S
A SPOT ON YOUR TIE 119
A home made version of a commercial effect
in which a selected card appears on the performer’s tie
tack. It can be handed out at the end. This routine
includes several other variations using a dollar bill and more.
GIVE
HIM DA SCREWS MUGSY 122
A peculiar mad-capped gangster-themed routine
for a simple mind reading effect using screw drivers and colored
screws!
VISUAL
IMAGERY 126
A great routine for a close-up mind reading
effect using various colored markers. Method is simple as can
be, the routine makes this powerful!
TABLE
MANNERS 129
A cool effect involving audience participation. The
spectators use mental concentration to try and cause a fork to
become a spoon and a spoon to become a fork. They try,
and they ALMOST succeed. The tops of the utensils DO indeed
change places, but they are slightly mangled in the process.
CREDIT
CARD CALAMITY 133
A great comedy routine involving a spectator’s
credit card, a thousand dollar phone bill, a set of ginsu knives
and an unexpected reappearance INSIDE another object!
COWABUNGA
DUDE 137
An odd chop cup effect themed after certain
now outdated ninja turtles using a turtle shell and featuring
an appearance of the famous foursome at the end!
PASTA
PRESENT AND FUTURE 141
A penetration of lasagna noodles that later
transform into a pile of macaroni!
THAT’S
THE WAY THE (FORTUNE) COOKIE CRUMBLES 145
The spectator becomes famous Chinese
magician and does some amazing things without even knowing how!
DON’T
POP YOUR TOP 149
A nifty presentation in which a signed sketch
of a bottle POPS, shoots a stream of water and the sketch changes
to an opened bottle!
PING
PONG COASTER 153
A coaster, a tack, a Ping Pong Paddle and
a deck of cards… Sounds like an opportunity to have a
card selected, marked, and magically end up tacked to the coaster
while cards fly everywhere when hit with a Ping Pong Paddle!
A
TWIST OF FATE 156
A spooky effect using tarot cards and an old
skeleton key. Before the adventure is over, the key twists around
the shank, and the deck is scorched. The twisting key ends up
bent but not before it reveals the spectators selected card!
ESPECIALLY
TRICKY 160
An E.S.P. effect goes awry, and ends with
a VISUAL transformation of one E.S.P. card to match the other,
followed by an unexpected change of the ENTIRE deck moments later!
Also offers a SECOND effect that is strictly mind reading, but
uses the SAME method.
MATCHY-SNAP 163
A nice quickie. Broken and restored match
stick. Very clean and very visual!
COUNTERFEITING
IS A FEDERAL OFFENSE 166
A great VISIBLE money printing effecting using

in the middle of the sheet of paper, complete with little lines
across its face, front and back… the bills is cut from
the center of the pager is LEGAL TENDER and can be given away
to a spectator.
HOW
TO SNAG A HOOKER 172
You’ll have to wait to read this one….
Don’t want to spoilt the surprise.
RING
IN THE MORN 176
A variation of an old ring off string effect
that happens in the spectators hands and in a very clean looking
manner!
A
CARD ASKEW 179
A zig zag card effect that is done without
cover and can be handed out at the end!
A
RAT THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS 182
A close up mirror penetration with a few
twists and a mirror that changes to a slice of swiss cheese at
the end.
VAMPIRES
DON’T PROTOGRAPH 185
A good press getter. A Polaroid picture

reporter finally gets to look at the picture, he will find that
though the background is there… the performer is invisible
in the photo.
THE
CHEESE STANDS ALONE 188
A piece of Swiss cheese is seen wrapped in
clear plastic. The performer causes the packaging and the
cheese to change nature so that the PLASTIC has holes, and the
cheese become SOLID.
CARBON
CONJURING 191
Carbon paper, dollar bill doodles, and vanishing
sketches. An unusual effect and clever method!
DIE
SUGAR DIE 195
A white spotted die is dropped into a cup
of coffee. It vanishes. A spectator rolls another
die to select any number they like. The coffee is poured
out. The die in the coffee has VANISHED, but spots on the bottom
of the cup match the number rolled by the spectator. NO FORCE!

warp effect involving the king of hearts baring his buttocks!

CHESHIRE GRANDPA 207
A photo of your grandfather penetrates a mirror,

later, the initialed photo is BLANK and grandpa's dentures are
all that are left on the table!

A bizarre premise for a cut and restored shoe
lace!

A wonderfully weird card trick using a drier
fabric softener sheet, hands that turn to foam rubber and of

An experiment in time travel where drawings
change, broken things are not, and watches flip themselves over
magically!

Another effect JUST for the gals. Nail
polish color changes to reveal a thought of card.
